Forwards Coach

Biography

Born on the Yorkshire coast town of Scarborough, Darren “Daz” Fearn is an experienced and highly-respected man in the English rugbying world. Starting his rugby from a young age at school level, Daz went on to study Sports Development & Coaching at Northumbria University, before signing a professional contract with Newcastle Falcons.

While continuing his career as a professional prop, Fearn played for the likes of Sale Sharks, Bedford Blues, and a loan stint at Saracens. Notably, he reached the Championship play-off final with Bedford in 2014, which unfortunately ended in defeat against old team, Newcastle.

After his retirement from playing rugby, Darren has had the opportunity to coach some very established sides and reap some impressive accolades and performances. He made his major break into the coaching world as Head of Rugby at his alma mater, Northumbria, finishing runners-up in the BUCS Super Rugby (BSR) league, their highest ever finish, coaching the likes of Will Muir and Josh Hodge who have played for the England A squad as of late. Daz then moved across the city to Newcastle University as Director of Rugby, who have been knocking on the door of the BSR league for years, but a set-up that sees many players progress to the Championship and even the Premiership.

Fearn has had the honour of being Head Coach of the England Students’ squad for the past six season, notably leading the boys to their first win versus France, in France, for 17 years. During this period, the likes of Fitz Harding and Luke Northmore have come through the program, along with a few current Knights: Ben Chapman, Fred Davies, George Wacokecoke and Jasper McGuire.

We are delighted to have Daz as a member of our coaching staff as Forwards Coach, and brings a very no-nonsense attitude to sessions which is visible to see early in the pre-season period. We look forward see the rewards that come from Darren’s experience as a coach, and also from his playing days.
